The terror begins when the crew of a spaceship investigates a transmission from a desolate planet, and discovers a life form that is perfectly evolved to annihilate mankind. One by one, each crew member is slain until only Ripley is left, leading to an explosive conclusion that sets the stage for its stunning sequel, "Aliens."

I have the whole Alien collection except Alien 3 which wasn't all that. The first two were the bomb!

I hate to be the Critic/Average-Type, I usually adore these movies

Well, let me start off with this movie had incredibly awesome intentions. This would have worked great as say, a ride at a theme park, or a video game, or maybe even a Nightmare, yeah, A NIGHTMARE! Perfect. But, watching someone else go through it, even as you hold back your suspension of disbelief wasn't as fun as Friday the 13th or Predator. Of course, the Alien itself was awesome, everything about The Alien was awesome, but it didn't appear enough and the characters were disposable, just waiting for them to die, at the end you kinda cheer for the last character but... yeah. I'm seriously sorry, but this would have been much better as some sorta interactive thing. I'll admit it had it's movie moments and I liked the inclusion of a cat, special effects are phenomenal (way better than CGI,) but it just didn't do it for me. The title design is pretty cool though. Now, I watched this on the Alien Quadrilogy (Alien/ Aliens /Alien 3 /Alien Resurrection) so I don't know if this has the same amount of special features for the movie as The Quadrilogy, I will tell you, The Quadrilogy has @$$ load of awesome special features for Alien. That I am proud of, and I'm planning on watching Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) which, if I remember watching that from when I was 8 (without Alien) I think it might be better. I, Da Cashman AKA Mr. Action AKA Dark Raptor AKA AKA signing off.

The Alien Is The Baddest Movie Villain Ever!

If only the crew listened to Sigourney Weaver's Ripley and followed quarantine protocol, they may have avoided all this fuss. Ian Holm's science officer Ash was the one who let the away team onboard - what's his problem? The answer is quite an unexpected twist.

The Alien is, unfortunately for the crew, a hungry killing machine whose "blood" is a highly corrosive acid. The Alien's "coming out" is one of the classic movie scenes of all time.

Ridley Scott does a great job directing the crew of the Nostromo which is really a tugboat taking a load of mineral ore from the outer reaches of space back to Earth. The Nostromo looks very much like a set from Kubrick's 2001.

A not so subtle subtext of this film is corporate greed. The crew is very concerned about getting their "share" and what to do to get a full instead of a half-share. Ash's motivation was greed as well.

When commercial towing vehicle Nostromo, heading back to Earth, intercepts an SoS signal from a nearby planet, the crew are under obligation to investigate. After a bad landing on the planet, some crew members leave the ship to explore the area. At the same time as they discover a hive colony of some unknown creature, the ship's computer deciphers the message to be a warning, not a call for help. When one of the eggs is disturbed, the crew do not know the danger they are in until it is too late. The dark, cold beauty of this movie will never be equaled.

Classic Deathtrap Suspense

This is horror the way it's supposed to be... this is classic suspense.

This isn't a movie with a lot of special effects - at least, not what you'd consider to be special effects these days. There's no CGI, no fancy green screen and computer graphics. The machinery and technology shown are old school. There isn't a lot of fancy futuristic 'gee-whiz' technology.

But it doesn't matter - the movie doesn't need that stuff.

Because this is one of those movies that actually has a plot, a storyline - it isn't just some sleazy slasher flick with blood spraying all over the place. This is real suspense and horror.

No matter how many times you see it, "Alien" will have you grabbing the edge of your seat. Even if you already know everything that's going to happen, you'll still jump. And that's what a good movie is about.

This isn't director Ridley Scott's ("Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)", "Gladiator (Widescreen Edition)", "Black Hawk Down") first effort, but it's one of his early ones, and the one that probably put him on the map. And he does it good. Just seven people in the cast, from old hands (Yaphet Kotto, Harry Dean Stanton) to fairly-new kids (Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright) - and Ridley Scott focuses the movie around them. The movie isn't about the special effects, it's about the people.

But you know about all of that already, unless you were just born. Terms and names from the movie have become legendary... Ripley. Facehugger. Chestburster. Sigourney Weaver in particular became well-known because of this movie and its sequels - so much so that she eventually did "Galaxy Quest" as a parody of Ripley. Kane was parodied in Spaceballs. Chestbursters appeared on "The X-Files".

Alien.

The movie has won numerous awards, and was even inducted into the AFI Hall of Fame.

What's different in this DVD version of the movie? For one, it's been remastered - the music and video have been hyped up a bit (though the audio is a little uneven in spots). There are some nice extras on this disc, and some turkeys (the outtakes are pretty much worthless, while the deleted scenes are interesting). The director's commentary is especially nice. You can try all the other DVDs of this movie, but this is probably the best one to get. If you like good movies. If you like class.
