This IDC study presents data for and an analysis of the worldwide CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, combo, DVD-Rec, Zip/MO/removable, and large form factor optical drives. Data from 2001 to 2003 is based on actual sales figures; data for 2004–2008 is forecast. Storage formats are grouped into seven categories. Detailed data for each category is given in terms of market value, unit shipments, average sales value, installed base, and regional shipments. Market share is given for the top 12 CD/DVD and the top 5 "other optical formats" manufacturers. Also, CD/DVD unit shipments are analyzed and forecast by slim and half-height (HH) form factor.
The optical/removable drive market is seeing moderate unit growth as the PC market recovers slowly. Affordable prices are keeping the dual-drive configuration attractive. "CD/DVD drive vendors need to get ready for increasingly stiff competition as the DVD speed race is coming to an end, and mainstream blue laser–based products are still a few years away," said Wolfgang Schlichting, research director, Removable Storage at IDC.
