I've really been enjoying all the Georgette Heyer re-releases that Sourcebooks has been putting out. This is the third one I've read (along with The Reluctant Widow [review] and Faro's Daughter [review]) and I can now say for certain that Heyer is an amazing author. I just can't believe it took me this long to read her novels!

I think that Cotillion is my favorite Heyer novel so far. The plot is fun enough, but it really is the characters that make this book. Kitty is sweet and her schemes are amusing. It is clear what she intends from the beginning of the novel, but it is fun to watch her plans unfold and unravel before her eyes. I also love how considerate she is: she is determined to help others, while being unsure of her own fate.

However, it was Freddy that really stole my heart in this novel. I love how he takes care of Kitty, how he goes along with her plans even though they are not his first choice. I enjoyed reading about how sweet he really is, how he does things he really would rather not and comes to Kitty's rescue time and time again, all because he is a gentleman and a good person. You could say I have a bit of a crush on Freddy - he reminds me of my husband!

Cotillion is completely fun and entertaining. I was completely hooked the whole time, hoping against hope that the novel turned out the way I wanted it to. If you haven't read any Heyer, this is a great place to start; if you have read Heyer and enjoyed her novels, read Cotillion as soon as you can! You'll definitely enjoy it.

Heyer does it again with this delightful tale of finding love when you least expect it. Young Kitty Charing finds herself in quite a pickle when she learns what her eccentric guardian has in store for her. The mean old goat has put a stipulation in his will that in order for her to inherit his fortune she must marry one of his great-nephews. Say what?! Well, that is just the most absurd thing she has ever heard and she means to take no part in it, except of course, to use it to her advantage.

One of the old goat's great-nephews and prospective suitors, "fashionista" Freddy Standon, joins forces with Kitty to get her out of dodge, so to speak. They fake a betrothal and persuade the eccentric to allow Kitty to stay with Freddy's family in London. She has never been there and is dying to get out of the boring, old house she has been stuck in for years and meet people her own age. What follows is a super cute story that will leave a smile on your face when you reach the end.

Kitty is adorable and naive and sweet, but she isn't your typical flawless heroin - she has her faults like the rest of us and the fact that your never quite sure who Kitty is going to end up with was the best part for me. If you're a fan of Heyers, Cottilion, will be up there with your favorites!

This is tied for first place as my all-time-favorite Heyer. It's funny, witty, never mushy and has the most hilariously endearing hero and heroine I've ever encountered.

"Cotillion" was actually the first Georgette Heyer book I have ever read. I'd heard of Heyer through word-of-mouth and even in other novels (like Bridget Jones's Diary), but just never seemed to get around to reading one of Heyer's novels. I am so happy that I did. It's basically as if I've "discovered" Heyer and now I'm eager to get my hands on every single novel that I can. I've read a lot of regency-inspired romances over the years and I have to say, that when it comes to realistic, this book is the closest I've ever come. The dialogue is full of phrases and slang (like, "it's all the crack") and the mannerisms of the characters feel real and authentic. Occasionally, I couldn't help but think that Freddie was gay. Sorry, but it just kept popping up in my head every time he commented on someone's hat or shawl... -but I let it go. One thing I was surprised about was the actual lack of overt romance. Rather, it was subdued and subtle throughout the book. I really loved this book. Read it. If you don't like regency romance novels, don't read it. But then, I'm not sure why you'd be on this page in the first place if you didn't.
