Editorial Reviews
On a daily basis, psychologists confront ethical issues. "Practical Ethics for Psychologists: A Positive Approach" helps psychologists clarify what they value, consider how they should behave, and determine what constitutes proper professional conduct. This book is unique in stressing the importance of positive ethics - that is, ways in which psychologists can reach their highest ethical ideals, rather than just avoiding breaking rules. Using the newly revised "2002 APA Code of Ethics" as a guide, the authors lay out a five-step model for resolving ethical dilemmas, illustrating the discussion with thumbnail sketches of both ethical and questionable behaviors. Throughout, they stress the importance of self-care, which involves self-regulation, emotional competence, and an understanding of the unique occupational challenges of being a psychologist. Readers will find themselves consulting the book over and over again for guidance on dealing with ethically complex issues like competence, multiple relationships, informed consent, confidentiality (including confidentiality with life endangering patients), fees and financial issues, public statements, and risk management. Individual chapters are devoted to special issues for psychologists working in forensics, teaching, business, assessment, therapy, and supervision and training. This book is ideal for classroom use or self-study.

This book is great for beginning psychologists. It breaks down the laws and gives great reasons for them.

I am using this book in a graduate Ethics course, and it is great. It provides an in depth overview of the APA Ethics Code but is also an impetus for discussion. From a student's point of view it has really helped me learn the code.

Good, short chapters

This text was required for a graduate level course on Ethics. The chapters are short and easy to read. It is enjoyable to read (as much as reading about Ethics can be enjoyable).

Do not buy until you have read the APA ethics code online for free

I'm not going to say that this book is a waste of time. If you are taking an ethics course and want something in writing to cite from, this is certainly a good book for that. My advice is: Do not buy until you have read the APA ethics code online for free. The APA puts its ethics code online for free, just type in 'APA ethics' into google. You will get a much better and concise description for 100% free. This book is not a manual, but rather, as a commentary of a guide of APA ethics. I gave it three stars because it is not neccessary to function as a Clinician - it is more like an supplemental guide for learning ethics.

Must reading for anyone who treats others for a living!

Knapp and VandeCreek achieved something almost impossible in the field of ethics instruction. They wrote a book that was informative and interesting to read! Ethics has long been a fascinating intellectual topic; however, it has rarely been a good read. With an informal and clear style and great examples it is enjoyable as well as an important book. I was pleased at the orientation- "A Positive Approach." Unfortunately too many use "ethics" with a punitive super ego. This book however shows us how we can stay out of trouble, not harm and be better at what we do. It is valuable for all in the helping professions.
