Everything I was looking for!!

My six year old son is allergic to what seems like everything, (dairy, soy, egg yolks, egg whites, nuts, wheat). I was so discouraged with my new task...finding something that I could feed him! Did I mention he is an extremely picky eater!? Anyway, this book helped us tremendously. We have the Whole Allergy Cookbook too, but the recipes in Sophie's Safe are much more kid friendly. Plus, the recipe ingredients are very easy to find! I really only had to change a few items, whereas the Whole Allergy recipes called for many items that I did not have. I am glad to be armed with both books, but so far, I haven't used the Whole Allergy Cookbook yet. Thank you, thank you, thank you Sophie Safe! :)

Good and healthy

I love the fact that this mom took a role in providing great food for her child. I look everyhere for options for my daughter who has dairy and egg allergies. This cookbook gives me ideas for healthy alternatives. I like grinding my own oat flour as well. The author is exactly right. Your first try may not come out perfect, but my second try with muffins I got the batter just right! The whole family enjoyed them as well as my students in my classroom. To get rave reviews from children eating healthy food is proof enough how good the cookbook truly is.

Disappointed

I was so excited about this book. My 13 month son has food sensitivities to wheat for sure, and we avoid soy, nuts, dairy and eggs. Therefore, it is hard to find things that he can eat--I am trying to be as creative as possible. I have tried 3 recipes from this book and not one has turned out well. The oatmeal muffins were flat and doughy and the oatmeal pancakes were the same. The porcupine meatball recipe needs to denote that brown rice should not be used, because even after cooking them for 1 hour, the rice was not cooked. I will try another recipe, but so far have been disappointed. I am finding that allergy free cooking is almost impossible to do and taste good.

Great find!

I am so happy to have found this book. I have been making the quick breads for my boys (one of which is allergic to peanuts, wheat, soy, egg, and milk). I have been making the breads into mini muffins to take the place of snack crackers, etc. THey love them. I also used the zuccini brownies for their (twin boys) birthday cake. It was great. Thanks so much for sharing your recipes!

Not For Me

While I truly appreciate the sharing of "allergen-free" recipes this book doesn't work for me. First, while it technically has wheat-free recipes, I mistakenly took that to mean gluten-free. Almost all baking recipes use oat flour which is not gluten free. Second, I need a low fat diet which means no beef. Finally, I need "legume-free" and this uses lots of beans in recipes. Almost every meal recipe uses beef so I would have to substitute right and left in this book. I was looking for a collection of recipes where I wouldn't have to substitute and this one isn't for me (but may be for you).
