Editorial Reviews
LIVING WITH PURPOSE IN A WORN-OUT BODY is an exploration of the inner life shared by many persons in nursing homes and retirement centers. With compassion and honesty, Buchanan gives voice to mingled feelings of loss, gratitude, resignation, courage, loneliness, and love. Buchanan lets readers know the difficult feelings of those living an assisted life: the ambivalence about being alive so long, the struggle against self-pity, the frustrations of limited strength and movement. She also mines the joys of living: laughter among friends, seeing grandchildren grow up, sifting through happy memories. Well chosen passages from the Psalms and New Testament stir feelings of hope and a trust in God's will, allowing the reader to respond with the joy and fortitude of faith.

A Modern Collection of Psalms Gives Voice to Our Neighbors in Homes for Seniors

This collection of Christian meditations by Missy Buchanan is unlike any book on the spirituality of aging that I've seen in recent years, which means that it's well worth reading if you're thinking about these issues.

In less than 100 pages, Missy has written a collection of contemporary Psalms about the experience of the sometimes somber end of the aging process -- the era of life when, to be honest, one's body is finally wearing out, as the cover puts it.

If you think about this collection of prayer-like poems as Psalms, you'll instantly understand the spiritual voice of this book.

As in Psalms, some of the pieces here are serious cries for spiritual help. But most of them contain seeds of wonderment that can turn tough times into opportunities for renewal of spirit. I especially like her poem-prayer "Whittled-Down World," which ends with the lines:

"The simple things point me to you, O God, Creator of all.
"Bless this whittled-down world and all who dwell in it."

One final note: This collection is "Christian" because it offers reflections from the New Testament for further reading along with Missy's own Psalms. Her publishing house serves a predominantly Protestant audience, as well. But, having said that, the words of these new Psalms she has written come from a strong Judeo-Christian tradition. Her pieces could be adapted for a more inclusive audience.

Good book worth sharing with loved ones

I bought this book to share with my aunt who had been extremely independent all of her life until the last couple of years. Feeling helpless, I thought the messages in this book might comfort her. I think they did. A lot of the messages are geared toward people in nursing homes, but they are still relevant to people nearing the end of their lives regardless of where they actually reside.

Heart-warming

This book is an easy read, yet each message can be savored and prayed. Both humor and inspirations abound. The large print (about 16 pt font) is appealing for those with failing vision.

This book quelled Mom's discouragement. It lifted her spirits.

I recently ordered a copy of Living With Purpose in a Worn Out Body for my eight-five year old mother-in-law who has been a resident of an assisted living facility for six years.

Author, Missy Buchanan has done a wonderful job of describing Mom's discouragement, doubts, and fears. She has captured the atmosphere in which Mom and others like her live.

I am thankful for her words of hope and encouragement that will help these dear ones find purpose in their last years.

Mom has found this book meaningful and it has lifted her spirits.
Large type also makes it easier for her to read.

I plan to order additional copies for gifts.

God is good! And God has blessed Missy Buchanan with the ability to relate what it is to be one of the frail elderly. My mother died last year at the age of 93, and reading through Missy's pages I am reminded again and again of how she endured those years of her failing health with such hope and grace.
I plan to share her book with the Stephen Ministers in our church, as several are caring for some of our older church members. It is perfect for this ministry.
