Major contributions have come to this still growing field of research from many branches of neuroscience, clinical neurology, psychology, and the emerging disciplines of biomechanics and robotics. As a result of this multidisciplinary effort, much progress has been made in understanding the attributes of motor behavior, the functional organization of motor control regions of the brain, the nature of commands for movement which emanate from these areas, and the manner in which these neural commands are processed subcortically to compensate for the mechanical properties of muscles and their attachments. This volume summarizes the deliberations of over forty outstanding researchers in the field of motor control—representing several of its constituent disciplines. It provides an up-to-date sampling of research in selected areas, perspectives on current issues and unresolved questions, and suggestions for future research.
