Summary: A Decent Introduction to the Truth
Comment: For those who only relied on the Starr-influenced mainstream media for information on the pathetic
Impeachment saga, Toobin's easy-to-read book will serve as a good introduction to the real story of
this joke of a scandal. What Toobin brings to the book, besides his understanding of the legal of
system, is the perspective of someone who wasn't reliant on Starr's leaks to meet a daily newspaper
or television show deadline. Thus, we get a good overview of the links between Starr's office and
the Jones lawyers, a glimpse into the background of the misfits who stayed with Starr throughout
the years and were obsessed with Clinton's sex life, a fine summary of the despicable Mike Iskioff
(Is it any suprise that his editor at Newsweek freaked when she realized that her magazine was
exposed for the Starr tool it was?), a clear outline of the lies of Linda Tripp, a few clear-cut
examples of Starr's falsehoods ("We never had contact with plantiff's lawyers," for one) and at
least one representative example of how the Washington Post's Susan Schmidt could be relied upon to
diseminate Starr's nonsense. However, for those who already knew most of this, Toobin's book might
come up a bit short. There is no mention of the Sheehan report, for example, no deep look into
Starr reign of terror in Arkansas, no analysis of Starr's lies in his House testimony, no real
analysis of the implication of Tripp's falsehoods about Vernon Jordan, and, worst of all, no real
inquiry to the implications of the Starr-Jim Moody relationship. Still, all in all, Toobin has done
a fine job at summarizing one of the most freightening periods in American political history.
Hopefully coming books will explore the areas Toobin ignored.

Summary: Fascinating reading
Comment: A Vast Conspiracy is compelling, captivating and thus hard to put down. The likely source of the
title must have been Hillary Clinton's truthful statement about the "vast right wing conspiracy"
driving Bill Clinton's impeachment proceedings. It provides insight into the machinations of the
right wing driving the well oiled political machine down the rode trying to rid us of the most
successful president we've had in recent history. This is definitely not your usual boring,
political, non-fiction. Toobin is very convincing in his theories.

Summary: An Important Book
Comment: A reasoned, reasonable, and balanced account of a shabby episode in our history whose outcome --
and the lessons learned from this book -- marked (one hopes) the beginning of the end of
extremist-dominated politics in our democracy. Bravo, Jeffrey Toobin!
