1,000 Recipes series is off to a roaring start. Carol Gelles's 1,000 Vegetarian Recipes won two of the most prestigious awards, the Julia Child/IACP and the James Beard Awards, and has enjoyed brisk sales (15,000 copies sold in 12 months). The second book in the series, 1,000 Low-Fat Recipes, is poised for even greater success.

Low-fat eating remains the most popular and medically sound way to lose weight and maintain good health. 1,000 Low-Fat Recipes is the bible of low-fat cookbooks. Here are recipes for every taste and occasion. There are appetizers, soups, salads, and sandwiches. There are main courses (both with meat and without), accompaniments, breads, and desserts. Golson even includes breakfast fare and a condiments and staples section for simple, flavorful cooking. Each recipe is accompanied by nutritional information.

In addition to the tempting body recipes, Golson packs her book with crucial information. She offers nutrition guidelines for healthy eating, a glossary of ingredients, the best techniques for low-fat cooking, and helpful hints for efficiency, menu planning, and improvising. 1,000 Low-Fat Recipes combines practical tips with delicious, foolproof recipes in one inspiring, indispensable book.

My favorite cookbook!

I've owned this cookbook for at least 2 years. Over time, the recipes in this book have beat out many other high fat recipes. I cook mostly healthy meals, although I love to cook with butter, so I'm not willing to give up flavor.

Everytime I make banana bread from this book (with choc chips added at my own discretion) I get requests for the recipe. That is just one example of many!

Absolutely worth the money, it will not sit on a shelf collecting dust.

I decided to change my eating habits to be low fat, and I watched calories and exercised. This book made it easy. I lost 80 pounds AND I ate better than I ever have before. This book was an invaluable tool for me to becoming lean and healthy.

I have owned this cookbook for a couple of years now, and I use it all the time. My husband & I have sampled many of the recipes and have never been let down. From the Peking Nooles & Scallops, to the Blueberry Lemon Muffins, to the Mexican Mole Chili, to every variety of roast chicken you could imagine, this book has as many delectable dishes to offer as the title suggests. Trust me: you WON'T be disappointed.

A definite keeper!!!

The fact that this book was originally published in 1997 and that I am writing a review for it in 2007 is a testimonial to just how great this book is. It is my "go to" cookbook and definetely one that everyone should have. We like to stray beyond the "meat and potatoes" recipes and this book gives a nice variety of ethnic recipes with ingredients that you can find in your local supermarket. It's just a great cookbook, and I highly recommend it.

We Are What We Eat -- Oh So True

Wanna cookup something a little different, like say a sample of Indian cusine on your hubby's plate? Well, tried the "Curried Mashed Potatoes" on Page 354 of this delightful lowfat cookbook. The peas mixed with the potatoes set off with a tangy curry powder makes for a tasty potatoe dish. There are a lot of other tasty, lowfat recipes in this book that I come back to again and again. like the "Pasta e Fagioli Soup" on Page 141, a perfect beginning to a meal. After all, who says all meals must start with salad. However, if you believe that, try the "Summer Herb Tomato Salad on Page 70.

With this book you can eat well and eat healthy at the same time, something my husband didn't think possible till I started pruning recipes from this booka and a few other. Ms. Golson really knows her stuff. She opens the book with the words "There is no longer any doubt that we are what we eat," and that is oh so true. If you want to slim down, but not feel like you're eating cardboard, give this book a look, you won't be sorry.
